Elementary and secondary educators work with students to develop a strong academic foundation necessary for success in life. Teacher certification options are available for elementary education, content areas for grades seven through twelve, and music or physical education for kindergarten through grade twelve. An alternative certification option is available for individuals who already possess a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field.
Elementary Education
A B.S. degree in elementary education is designed for individuals desiring to teach students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Certification options vary for the State of Texas and the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. Teaching options include self-contained classrooms, departmentalized programs, and single-subject concentrations.
After obtaining an initial certification for the State of Texas, educators may apply for additional certifications. Additional information regarding a Seventh-day Adventist credential may be found at adventisteducation.org.
Secondary & K-12 Music or Physical Education
Teacher certification programs are available in multiple content areas. Secondary credentials prepare candidates to teach in grades seven through twelve. Teacher certification in music or physical education prepares candidates for kindergarten – 12th grade. Consult with your content area advisor in addition to an education advisor to plan your program.
Alternative Education
The alternative certification program is available for individuals who would like to become a teacher and have completed a bachelor’s degree in a different discipline. Candidates earn a certificate that prepares them for the State of Texas certification exams.
All teacher certification candidates must meet education department admission requirements.

“Southwestern Adventist University's Department of Education and Psychology welcomed me with open arms. After flying from Hawaii to attend SWAU, I was worried about the culture shock. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the amount of diversity within the program and realized there were students coming from many different places to attend SWAU. The professors were very intentional about getting to know each student and learning about their culture.
The professors were very innovative with technology and knowledgeable about the subjects they taught. I felt very confident entering my first- year of teaching. Their encouragement and support are still in my life today as they continue to check-in. The relationships they build with their students are long-lasting.”
