A common misconception about a degree in history is that it only leads to teaching careers. The opportunities are much broader than that. The Department of History and Social Science at SWAU encourages students to not only learn about history but to interpret and define it actively.
History majors will gain experience in research that will develop their understanding of the history, cultures, and governments that shaped today’s societies. The history program at Southwestern Adventist University prepares students for careers as a:
- Journalist
- Librarian
- Public policy advocate
- Politician
- Teacher / Professor
- Curator
- Historian
- Archivist
- Geographer
- Park ranger
- Business consultant
- Anthropologist

Emily Weaver
“At the beginning of my political thought course, I thought I knew for certain what I believed about people and human nature. This class challenged me in those principles and pushed me to think in more detail about what I believe.”
“I have learned so many things in this course, and [I’ve] gotten to know more about different philosophers, such as Burke, Plato, Augustine, Locke, and Marx. Thank you, Ms. Bowser, for this class. I was afraid at the beginning because I believed that I wasn’t very good at thinking ‘politically,’ but it was an eye-opener, and now I know a little more about [how] government works and the views of these political thinkers.”
