Frank Sherrill was born in Mount Pleasant, Arkansas. At age 11, he and his parents moved to Jefferson, Texas, so he could attend church school. After graduating from high school in 1941, he came to Keene, Texas, where he graduated from Southwestern Junior College with the Class of 1943. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in theology in 1945 at Union College. Frank married Joy Hargrove Sherrill on June 4, 1944, in Alexandria, Louisiana. Joy was born and raised in Louisiana but came to Texas where she graduated from Southwestern Junior Academy in 1943.
Frank and Joy began their ministry in the Texas Conference. Frank was ordained to the gospel ministry at the Texas camp meeting in Keene in 1949. He pastored several churches in Texas and Colorado, and also served as conference evangelist for a period of time in both states. In 1956 he received a call to be the education and youth director of the Missouri Conference where he served for three years.
In 1959, the Sherrills moved to the Potomac Conference where Frank served as youth director. While living there, Joy received her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from James Madison University. Frank became youth director of the Southwestern Union in 1963, and three years later he was elected president of the ArkansasLouisiana Conference. After an eight-year tenure in that field, he received a call to be president of the Arizona Conference, where he served in that capacity for 14 years, retiring October 1, 1988.
After retirement, Frank conducted evangelistic crusades in Arizona and northern New England, and three evangelistic crusades in the Central Philippine Union with more than 1,200 being baptized. Frank had the privilege of serving on the board of trustees of four Adventist colleges, including 11 years on the Southwestern's board. He also served as president of the Texas Association of Junior Colleges in 1965. Joy passed away in 1999.
The Sherrills established this scholarship for ministerial students who have financial need and high academic achievement.
