Frank H. Abel was born in Cleburne, Texas, on September 10, 1903. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Abel, had long been active in the work of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and lived in Keene. Frank received his education at Southwestern Junior College, attending from 1921 to 1924. While at Southwestern, he was a member of the school orchestra and worked in the college print shop. In addition to Frank, Mr. and Mrs. Abel had nine other children who also received education in Keene and participated in the work of the Church at Keene. One brother, the late Elder R. P. Abel, was a missionary at the Adventist hospital in Siam, where he was interned by the Japanese during World War II.

On July 24, 1924, Frank Abel married Mary Frances Holmes, a visitor to Keene from Hot Springs, Arkansas. They had three children, Frank Jr., Juanita, and Don. Mr. and Mrs. Abel moved to Fort Worth and then Dallas in 1928, where Mr. Abel entered the paint contracting business. He later did general contracting work. Following World War II, he continued general contracting and began real estate development in Dallas. He was also active in various civic and service organizations in the Dallas area. Mr. Abel owned and operated Dal-Gar Grain Terminal at the time of his death in an airplane accident on February 13, 1963.
