Born in the British Isles to missionary parents, Judson Durrant came to the U.S. at the age of five. Due to his father's duties as a pastor, the family moved frequently, living in New Jersey, Ohio, and California, among other states. Judson was an avid learner, always willing to learn, even though he moved from school to school. He won gold medals in spelling competitions held at Ohio State University for two consecutive years. He majored in music with an emphasis in piano and voice at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. At this same University, Judson won a gold medal in a voice competition, earning him a scholarship to Boston Conservatory of Music. As a tenor soloist, he performed concerts in Canada, Great Britain, Europe, and across the United States, including New York and Washington, D.C. For these concerts, Judson received critical acclaim in numerous press reviews. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported him as "a vocal soloist of uncommon quality."

Judson met Laurice Kafrouni at the White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, where she was a surgical nurse. They were married on December 4, 1960, in Los Angeles. He provided moral and financial support for her as she pursued her master's and doctoral degrees at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Judson praised God and gave Him the credit for blessing him with musical talents. In turn, he shared his vocal talent and his blessings with his voice students through the years. The Judson N. Durrant Memorial Music Scholarship was established by his wife, Laurice.

Scholarship award requirements

This scholarship is awarded to sophomore or junior voice and/or other music majors who exhibit solid spiritual values.
