As a teenager, Sadie longed to attend Southwestern Junior College and become a nurse. However, as the oldest of five children, family circumstances did not allow her to attend Southwestern Junior College or to finish high school.
When Sadie was 52 years old, her husband, John, died unexpectedly. Her thoughts then turned to her early dreams of nursing. It seemed impossible that in her circumstances she would be able to enter any nursing program. However, Sadie was admitted provisionally to the Park Place Licensed Vocational Nursing program in Port Arthur, Texas, which she successfully completed and then passed state boards. She worked as an Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) for 10 years at Park Place Hospital in Port Arthur in the intensive care unit and the pharmacy. She loved her patients, enjoyed her coworkers, and found great satisfaction in the service of nursing. Sadie retired from nursing in 1975. She passed away in 2004 at the age of 91.
This scholarship was established by Dorothy and George Saxon to honor Sadie's love of nursing. It seeks to encourage a nursing student whose dreams of nursing may have been delayed by family obligations, or an LVN returning to complete the RN program.
