The name prophet "was given also to those who, though not directly inspired, were divinely called to instruct the people in the works and ways of God. For the training of such a class of teachers, Samuel, by the Lord's direction, established the schools of the prophets" (Ellen G. White, Education, p. 46). Second Kings chronicles the activities of the students at the schools of the prophets under Elisha's supervision. As a visiting professor, Elisha let the young people observe the workings of the Lord in his own ministry. They saw him teach one student's young widow and two little boys how to make money to live on by selling God-given oil, they saw him save several students' lives after they had gathered poisonous herbs for their soup, and they worked with him to enlarge student housing and to retrieve a borrowed ax from the bottom of the River Jordan. Elisha not only showed the students how to minister, but he also gave them responsibilities for ministry while they were still in school. He sent one to anoint the new King of Israel. By the time they had completed their classwork, these young people were ready for the challenges that lay ahead of them.

The anonymous alumni donors of the School of the Prophets Scholarship recognize the religion department of Southwestern as a modern-day school of the prophets, preparing young people who are service-oriented for ministry to the world church.
