Blessed to Serve in Cali, Colombia
Aug 18 2022 - 3:15pm
On June 19, 2022, a group of brave volunteers from around the world landed in Cali, Colombia. The team would soon launch an incredible medical mission for the people of the city in collaboration with Adventist World Radio (AWR) and the local Seventh-day Adventist churches. By June 21, a tent city had been erected, supplies stocked, equipment set up, and dozens of volunteers prepared to serve. During the next four days the team of dedicated local and international volunteers served more than 2,000 patients and delivered more than 3,000 lifestyle, medical, and chaplain services.
Volunteer medical services included primary care, pediatrics, optometry, mental health, dentistry, pain management, women's health, and an on-site pharmacy. Other services included haircuts, massage therapy, nutrition, legal services, and health seminars complete with live music and audience discussion. The four volunteers, three nursing students and one nursing professor, from Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) Department of Nursing were instrumental members of the team blessed to serve in invaluable roles. Kimberli Alba served in triage. Nathalie Ruch served in pharmacy. Arrian Porter served in women's health. Associate Professor Dr. Lakicia Foster served in coordinating and teaching health education.
Many of the 2,000 people served also signed up for Bible studies to learn more about Jesus and His saving power in their lives. The commitment and dedicated service of the entire team as the hands and feet of Jesus was so inspiring. Our lives are forever changed by this opportunity to be co-laborers with Christ and the astounding community of Adventist believers and Adventist World Radio. May God continue to bless His work around the world and through SWAU.
