Recently, Southwestern students “rubbed shoulders” with nearly 1,000 Adventist business owners at the annual Hyve Creators 2024 Convention. Not only did they learn from the experience of like-minded professionals, but Southwestern’s Enactus team even placed second out of six universities in a “collegiate pitch” competition, earning a $5,000 prize.
This money will be used to support Little Leaf, a project in which Enactus teaches community members how to grow microgreens through hydroponics. Additionally, the curriculum includes health classes and guidance on how to sell microgreens for secondary income.
“This achievement was particularly significant given the outstanding performance of each of the six universities,” said Licci Zemleduch, Director of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center and SWAU Enactus Advisor. “It exemplified the caliber of talent and innovation fostered within the Adventist academic ecosystem.”
Hyve Creators 2024 Convention took place from February 29 to March 3 at Southern Adventist University. More than just a business convention, Hyve specializes in the integration of mission work and business ownership. As a result, students learned from “everyday missionaries” and entrepreneurs such as Jess Zwicker, President of Hyve; Andrew Yoo, the CEO of Business Payment Systems; and more.
“I am deeply grateful for the Hyve initiative, ” said Sandra Morales, junior Social Media Marketing major. “The focus on integrating mission work into the realm of business not only inspired me, but also solidified my passion for my career path.”
During the event, Southwestern students engaged with peers from diverse backgrounds, exchanging ideas and experiences intended to fuel their passion for entrepreneurship.
“I had the opportunity to meet and converse with students from all over,” said Timothy Eapen, Sophomore Finance major. “Witnessing their passion and drive truly motivated and encouraged me.”
Just like Hyve, on-campus initiatives such as the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, and student-led organizations like Enactus, continue to encourage a business and missional spirit at Southwestern. As a result, these programs help empower students to make a tangible impact in the world.
“My passion is providing the best hands-on learning experiences for my students which enhance their résumé while also impacting the community,” said Zemleduch. “I am proud of our team.”
