As the sun began to rise on a gorgeous Texas spring day, 86 golfers were beginning to descend on the Southern Oaks Golf Club for the Alumni Golf Classic for Southwestern Adventist University’s Homecoming weekend.  

For the last 13 years, the annual event has raised funds for Southwestern students who are the first in their family to attend college. Approximately 150 students have now benefited from this scholarship fund.  

This year, the event broke a record with $51,140 raised.  

Lesly Cuellar, one of the previous scholarship recipients, shared, “I have a lot of goals for my life. Graduating is one of the first big ones. After I graduate, I want to help my community. One of my other big goals is to help create leaders in the community for the next generation, to encourage them in their career choices. This scholarship has enabled me to work toward these goals.” 

Congratulations for first-place went to the team from Ben E. Keith (Nick Andersen, Jim Kelley, Landon Loggins, and Shaw Thompson; second place went to the team from Brothers Produce (Chad Campbell, Carl LaBarba, Morris Salerno, and John Slaughter); and third place went to one of the alumni teams including Kris Herman, Travis Simpson (‘04), Will Traylor, and Levi Whitcomb (‘09).
