“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”, Philippians 4:6-7 NIV.
Our college students face new challenges each day. Adversity is part of life, and sometimes, it can get the best of all of us, which is why it is crucial to anticipate life's ups and downs by learning how to cope with difficult times. The SWAU Counseling and Testing Center is committed to promoting mental wellness on campus. Over the past four years, this vital department has offered Christian-based counseling, pioneered new and creative stress-relief initiatives for the student body, and even created a dedicated space just for relaxation.
The newly unveiled Relaxation Station, located in the counseling center in the Moran Hall building, is a haven for students intentionally seeking rest. This space, complete with a massage chair, snacks, and a TV, invites students to pull away from the pressures of school and re-center themselves. Beyond this space, the center organizes creative events known as stress-busters, which have offered therapy dog visits to therapeutic rock-painting nights.
In addition to counseling services, the center offers test-taking assistance for students under special circumstances and programs or who need more focused attention. Disability support is another service offered by the center, ensuring that proper accommodations are provided for students with documented disabilities.
Dorie Cruz, a valued member of the center's team, recently celebrated her two-year anniversary at SWAU. Armed with a degree in Psychology and a Master's in Counseling, here is what Ms. Cruz said about her work: “The work we do guiding students through their college careers is something I’m passionate about. These years are transformative for many young people, and it's very fulfilling to aid young adults as they navigate the complexities of self-discovery. Although, my favorite part of what I do is meeting and interacting with our students.”
The Counseling and Testing Center provides a safe haven where students can address their emotional and psychological well-being with dedicated and qualified staff. The university is proud to house and support this essential department, finding reassurance that the dedicated staff members are watching out for the well-being of the SWAU community.
