Five Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) nursing students took time out of their busy schedules to plan a Health Education Day for the students at Kauffman Leadership Academy in Cleburne, Texas. The nursing students created a booklet entitled “My Health Plan” that guided the students through the four health stations they set up to measure blood pressure, vision, height, weight, body mass index, and oxygen saturation levels before and after exercise. They also helped kids learn good nutritional choices by helping them “build” a healthy plate of food using fake foods for a hands-on, learning experience. After lunch the nursing students took the kids outside to play kickball.
Mallory Pittman, reflected, “I think this was a great experience getting to know the children and seeing them want to better themselves. It was really rewarding and made me that much more excited to graduate and hopefully continue to work with children.”
“It was amazing to see these kids having so much fun with everything we had planned for them! Our Health Day was a huge success,” said Amy Curo.
