For nursing students around the globe, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the learning experience from the classroom to clinicals. While various restrictions have limited in-person clinical learning opportunities in hospital settings, doors have also been open for aspiring nurses to get involved in unique initiatives. For Southwestern Adventist University nursing students, the opportunity to support mass COVID-19 vaccination clinics is not only a very relevant learning experience, but also a way to serve the community.

SWAU nursing students have joined frontline workers from the Cleburne Fire Department, Burleson Public Health Authority and Texas Health Huguley Hospital in administering COVID-19 vaccines to members of the community. The clinics have focused on providing vaccines to the elderly and individuals with health risks. 

Cleburne Fire Chief, Scott Lail, reports that nearly 5,000 administered each week during a spring clinic that began at the start of March. As volunteers, students had the opportunity to interact with residents from across Johnson County, they have been learning how the pandemic has impacted individuals and have had the opportunity to offer support, including prayer, to vaccine recipients. Taking part in these clinics reminds students why they are working hard to fulfill their dream of a future nursing career.

Dr. Kerrie Kimbrow, AdventHealth Endowed Chair for the Department of Nursing, is delighted to have students partner in meeting the health needs of the community. “This has not only been a great learning experience for the students, but also a nice way to give back. We want to recognize and appreciate all who serve on the front lines of healthcare.”

SWAU’s Department of Nursing provides one of the top learning experiences for nursing students in Texas. Offering an on-campus B.S. Nursing as well as an online R.N. to B.S.
