ENACTUS TEAM WINS REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN

Twenty-five Southwestern Adventist University students recently travelled to the Enactus Regional Competition and job fair in Dallas.  The competitions are challenging, team-oriented events that create a sense of accountability and motivation for teams to continually improve the quality of their community projects.   In total, 34 colleges and 17 judges participated in the regional event.  The judges who assess the clubs are business professionals and executives from partnering corporations such as Walmart, CVS, Microsoft and Home Depot.

This is the fourth year in a row the Southwestern Adventist University Enactus team will compete at the national level.  They have placed second in their division at the national level for the past two years.  Last year the team also placed as finalists in two topic competitions at nationals for specific projects from Johnson & Johnson and CVC Capital Partners.  They will travel to Kansas City, MO, in May for the National Competition.

Over the last four years the team has earned $8,600 in partnership grant funds plus over $8,000 in Enactus competition awards.  This year the team won the Unilever Bright Future Partnership & Sam's Club Step Up for Small Business.

Before the excitement of the competition comes months of hard work: each Enactus team, from various colleges around the country, must develop and conduct projects to better their communities.  This year’s projects for the Southwestern Adventist University Enactus include

  • Business in a Box - after school program that teaches entrepreneurship to middle school students
  • Rez Refuge - built a second greenhouse/garden area in New Mexico to reach the Navajo community
  • Mountain Coffee - female entrepreneurship empowerment
  • Pan American Technical School - funded technical school education in Honduras

The team will present their competition presentation for the University campus at 1:00pm on Tuesday, April 25 in Wharton Auditorium, Mabee Center.
