Larry R. Moore Nursing and Administration Building Positively Impacts Students

It has been six months since Southwestern Adventist University officially opened the Larry R. Moore Nursing and Administration Building, located in the center of campus. The university’s nursing students have been experiencing the state-of-the-art facility filled with advanced technology and modern and spacious classrooms.  

“The extra space has been a benefit for nursing students and staff,” said Dr. Terri Gibson, an associate professor of nursing. “We all have much more space for studying, learning, and working in groups, both large and small.” 

Not only is the Larry R. Moore Nursing and Administration building a major addition to the campus, but it also facilitates in Southwestern Adventist University’s mission to prepare excellent nurses. Katelin Brunson, a current nursing student, describes the building as a “beautiful, professional place to learn.” As to the educational benefits of the new building, she comments, “During some of my nursing classes, when a teacher is making a reference to an assessment to be done in the clinical setting, we go to the skills lab, they show us, and we are able to practice it immediately.” 

The department’s 16-bed skills lab is available for students to learn and demonstrate nursing procedures. The 80-seat computer classroom is used for online testing, a skill needed to help prepare students for their NCLEX nursing license exam. 

Utilizing the high-fidelity manikins, instructors are able to change things such as heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. This give students the ability to respond to changing patient conditions and use the skills they have learned and practiced in the skills lab. During the simulations, students are recorded so they can sit down with their instructor in the debriefing rooms following the simulation to watch and learn from their experience.
