Secondary Teaching Certification
The Department of Education and Psychology at Southwestern Adventist University offers two different types of teaching certifications: Secondary Teaching and Alternative Certifications.
Secondary Teaching Certifications are designed for students taking a degree with an emphasis in teaching. The Alternative Certification Program is designed for graduates who have a desire to return to school for to enter the field of education.
Our graduates seeking Texas State certification have a pass rate of 100% on the state required exams. All of our graduates seeking a teaching position in a Seventh-day Adventist school or a Texas public school receive an offer for employment within a year of graduation.
Certificate Options
- State of Texas certification: Pass three required state tests (Core Subjects, Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities/edTPA, and the Science of Teaching Reading (see the undergraduate bulletin for more details)
- North American Division of Seventh-day Adventist Teaching certification: Complete all the coursework as stated in the North American Division (NAD) certification handbook.
General Education Requirements
In addition to the University’s General Education requirements, all elementary and secondary majors take a Professional Development component of 36 hours. Secondary Education majors take this along with their major and minor, while elementary takes an additional 39 credits in teaching methods.

The Alternative Certification Program is designed for individuals who are in possession of an undergraduate degree and their degree is not in the field of education, but they want to enter the teaching profession. It is our goal to prepare individuals for State Certification in the State of Texas in just 12-18 months.
