Southwestern Adventist University is off to a great start this fall semester. The campus is alive with activity and our students are thankful to be here. As plans were made to open for the fall semester, consideration was given to enhanced safety guidelines and procedures that ensured the health and wellbeing of everyone on campus considering COVID-19. How are things going? Well, life may look different, but our students are showing us that they are willing to step up to the challenges and continue to grow. Here are 7 ways that we have prepared so that students can pursue their goals.

  1. Daily Screenings

Each morning students, faculty and staff undergo a symptom screening that includes a temperature check. Upon being cleared, a wristband indicates that they are free to access campus facilities. Daily screening stations are available across campus and morning stations are set up in high-traffic areas.

  1. Face Coverings & Physical Distancing

Cloth face coverings are required in all buildings on campus and outside when physical distancing can not take place. Students are encouraged to take personal responsibility and mask up to protect each other.

  1. Health Services

A sickness protocol indicates what students should do if they experience any symptoms. Our campus nurse has outlined steps to help any students who might need testing or additional medical care. Health Services hours have been expanded and we have been blessed to provide students with great care.

  1. Academics

Classes can be seen meeting in limited capacity indoors, online and even outside! Professors have created flexible plans that have allowed for hybrid learning. Students who have chosen to access classes completely online are still receiving the benefit of continuing their education.

  1. Cafeteria

Chef Sualua and his team have focused on a streamlined service that includes two lines and a to-go option. The dining room is operating at 50% capacity and hours have been extended to provide for more flexibility. With beautiful fall weather in the forecast, students can enjoy more picnic meals outdoors.

  1. Campus Activities

While physical distancing is the norm, we don’t want to be socially distant. Social interactions are essential for emotional and mental wellbeing and campus activities play an important role in cultivating a great experience. Students can enjoy a variety of activities sponsored by Student Services, Student Association, campus clubs, etc. Intercollegiate athletics has begun with guidelines on health screenings and occupancy limits. The gymnasium is open, with protocols, for workouts and recreation. In addition, students have access to the duck pond, walking trails and tennis courts. Students are encouraged to enjoy activities that promote overall health.

  1. Worship

Central to everything we do is a focus on Christ. Worship is an opportunity for our campus to praise God for his many blessings! The Spiritual Life and Development office has both traditional and creative ways for students to experience worship. From church services with capacity limits, to outdoor vespers and zoom meetings, there is an option for everyone to pursue God.

When we think about the importance of delivering Christ centered education, we realize the responsibility of creating an environment that is safe and nurturing. What is best for our students drives our decisions and inspiring their pursuit of knowledge, faith and service continues to be our greatest goal.
