US Department of Education Awards $2,517,376 Title V Grant to SWAU

Southwestern Adventist University has been awarded a Title V grant by the US Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program. Over the next five years, SWAU will receive around half a million dollars each year, for a total of just over $2.5 million, which will be used to improve student outcomes through “Pathways to Student Success.” SWAU was one of about half a dozen schools in the DFW area to be selected as recipient of this competitive grant. 

The university is proud to be a Hispanic Serving Institution, with 48 percent of the student body being of a Hispanic or Latino background. The funds are inclusive for all students and the initiatives made possible through the funds from this grant will benefit not only its Hispanic population but the entire student body as well.

“We saw a need. We knew a large portion of our students were the first in their family to attend college and would benefit from a strong support system. We sat here and dreamed of all the things we could do if only we had the money, and now we have the opportunity to make those things happen,” shares Renata Ocampo, Director of the Center for Academic Success and Advising, who was part of the team that drafted the grant application.

Dr. Donna Berkner, Vice President for Academic Administration, Dr. Marcel Sargeant, Assistant Vice President for Academic Administration and Dr. Tom Bunch, Grant Manager were also part of this same team. They identified three focus areas for the grant, including improving retention rates, graduation rates and employment rates post-graduation.

Thanks to “Pathways to Student Success,” The Office of Student Success has been created to serve as a space where students can seek guidance and learn skills that will prepare them for life after college. This office will collaborate with the Center for Academic Success and Advising, also known as CASA, as they oversee the grant’s four elements: first-year experience, internships, and both academic and career guidance. 

The First-Year Experience Program will guide students through their first two years of higher education. Led by CASA, this program will work in tandem with Student Success Coaches and will be supported by the faculty who teach the general education courses needed by first-year students. This will allow for students to have a successful experience during their first two years, as they will have more resources available to them.

In order to ensure academic success, students in any stage of their college career will be able to benefit from academic coaching and study sessions facilitated by CASA. Currently, academic coaching/tutoring is available at CASA, and its collaboration with the Office of Student Success will give students more resources to address both their academic and career needs.

Data-driven decision making will help formalize career fairs, help students with the job search process and bring guest speakers to ensure career readiness for SWAU students. The Office of Student Success will facilitate a variety of workshops covering topics such as how to write a resume, how to dress for an interview and how to look for employment in the current global market.

Lastly, the Office of Student Success will help students who are seeking internship opportunities and guide them through that process. The Student Success Manager will collaborate with academic departments to review current available internships and develop relationships with other entities to provide more internship opportunities for students.

There are several goals SWAU hopes to meet by 2025, including an increase in four-year graduates, institutionalizing academic support services on campus and expanding career development. With funding going into effect October 1^st, the Office of Student Success has been formed and a leadership team is in place. Furthermore, an oversight committee will be developed to support this office and its efforts to improve student success. 

“This really is such a blessing,” shares Dr. Berkner. “When we heard we were recipients of this grant, we were so grateful! This is truly an answer to prayer, and it will open so many doors for our students.”

La universidad adventista de southwestern (SWAU) ha sido otorgada una beca titulo V de parte del programa de servicio a hispanos del departamento de educación de los estados unidos.  Sobre los proximos 5 años, la universidad recibirá alrededor de medio millón de dolares cada año- un total de mas de 2.5 millones de dolares. Estos fondos serán utilizados para mejorar resultados de nuestros estudiantes por medio del programa caminos hacia el exito estudiantil, un programa establecido por la universidad para que nuestros estudiantes se superen.  La universidad fue una de seis universidades en el area de Dallas-Fort Worth que fue seleccionada como beneficiario de esta beca. 

La universidad está orgullosa de ser una institución que sirve la comunidad hispana, donde el 48 porciento de nuestros estudiantes son hispanos o latinos.  Los fondos son exclusivos para todos los estudiantes y las iniciativas hechas posible por medio de esta beca beneficiarán no solo los estudiantes hispanos, sino el alumnado entero.

 “Vimos la necesidad.  Sabiamos que una gran porción de nuestros estudiantes son los primeros en sus familias en asistir a una universidad, y les haría un gran beneficio tener un sistema de apoyo.  Soñamos con todo lo que podemos hacer con este dinero, y ahora tenemos la oportunidad de hacerlo realidad,” dice Renata Ocampo, directora del centro para éxito academico y asesoramiento.  Ocampo fue parte del equipo que llenó la solicitud para la beca.

Dr. Donna Berkner, vice presidenta para administración academica, Dr. Marcel Sargeant, vice presidente asistente para administración academica, y el Dr. Tom Bunch, cordinador del programa de becas también fueron parte del mismo equipo.  Identificaron tres areas de enfoque: mejorando los indices de retención estudiantil, indices de graduación, e indices de empleo despues de graduación.

Gracias al programa caminos hacia el exito estudiantil la oficina de éxito del estudiante ha sido creada para servir como un espacio donde estudiantes pueden buscar consejos y aprender habilidades que los prepararán para sus carreras despues del colegio.  Esta oficina colaborará con el centro para éxito academico y asesoramiento, también conocido como CASA, y supervisarán los cuatro elementos de la beca: la experiencia del estudiante en el primer año, prácticas, guias academicas y guias de carrera.

El programa para la experiencia del estudiante en el primer año guiará a estudiantes en sus primeros dos años de educación.  Patrocinado por el programa CASA, este programa trabajará junto con instructores para el éxito estudiantil y será apoyado por los maestros quienes enseñan los cursos de educación general.  Con estos programas, estudiantes tendrán una experiencia exitosa durante sus primeros dos años de instrucción y también tendrán acceso a recursos adicionales.

Para que todo esto funcione, estudiantes en cualquier etapa de su carrera estudiantil podrán ver los beneficios de instrucción academica y sesiones de estudio facilitados por CASA.  Actualmente, instrucción academica y tutoría es disponible por medio de CASA, y su colaboración con la oficina de exito para el estudiante dará mas recursos para todas las necesidades academicas de nuestros estudiantes.

Decisiones serán hechas despues de analizar data para formalizar ferias de carreras y ayudar a estudiantes con el proceso de buscár y encontrar trabajo despues del colegio.  Tambien invitarán a oradores especiales para asegurar que los estudiantes estén preparados.  La oficina de éxito estudiantil facilitará variedad de seminarios informativos para enseñarle a los estudiantes diferentes temas centrales: aprender a crear un resumé, vestidura apropriada, y como estar preparados para una entrevista en este mercado global.

Por último la oficina de éxito estudiantil preparará a estudiantes quienes buscan oportunidades de practicar, y los guiará por ese proceso.  El administrador colaborará con departamentos academicos para revisar internados disponibles y desarrollar relaciones con compañias que pueden ofrecer mas oportunidades a nuestros estudiantes.

SWAU tiene varias metas para acompletar antes del año 2025, incluyendo aumentar el numbero de graduados de 4 años, la institucionalización de servicios de apoyo academico y tambien la expansión del desarroyo de carreras.  Con estos fondos disponibles el primero de octubre, la oficina de éxito estudiantil ha sido formada y un equipo de liderazgo está listo para trabajar.  Un comité sera desarroyado tambien para apoyar a esta oficina en sus esfuerzos para mejorar el éxito de los estudiantes.
