Southwestern Adventist University Hosts Hal Wright Lecture with David Bebbington

On November 16, 2019, Southwestern Adventist University will host the Hal Wright Science and Religion Lecture Series with Dr. David Bebbington, a Distinguished Visiting Professor of History at Baylor University. The lecture will begin at 4:00 pm in Wharton Auditorium at the Mabee Center. 

What exactly do we mean when we say “evangelical”?  How should we understand this many-sided world religious phenomenon? How do recent American politics change that understanding? David Bebbington, whose “Bebbington Quadrilateral” remains the standard characterization of evangelicals used worldwide, will examine how evangelicalism has been evaluated and will discuss the movement’s perils and promise today.  His lecture, entitled Evangelicals: Who they have been, are now, and could be” will likely engage thought-provoking discussion.

About Dr. David Bebbington:

An undergraduate at Jesus College, Cambridge (1968-71), David Bebbington began his doctoral studies there (1971-73) before becoming a research fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge (1973-76). Since 1976, he has taught at the University of Stirling, where from 1999 to 2019 he was Professor of History. He has also taught at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, at Regent College, Vancouver, at Notre Dame University, Indiana, at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and at Baylor University, Texas. In 2016 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His publications include Evangelicalism in Modern Britain: A History from the 1730s to the 1980s (1989) and Evangelicalism and Fundamentalism in the United Kingdom during the Twentieth Century (co-ed., 2013).  His newest publication with the same title as his talk, Evangelicals:  Who They Have Been, Are Now, and Could Be, will be available for purchase after the lecture.

The Hal Wright Lecture Series:
With the integration of knowledge and faith being firmly rooted on the campus, Southwestern Adventist University began a new lecture series last year, entitled, the “Hal Wright Science and Religion Lecture Series.”  Named after one of Southwestern Adventist University’s former faculty members and academic dean, this series is designed to promote scholarly discussion on science and religion.  “Universities are often known for providing opportunities for their communities to come and listen to well-known speakers on relevant and current topics.  We are so thankful for wonderful supporters who make this lecture series possible”, shared University President, Ken Shaw.  The University looks forward to welcoming guests to Bebbington’s lecture on November 16. While tickets are not required, space is limited so arrive early.
