We are proud that our nursing students have a NCLEX pass rate above the national average. This past year, our 2019 graduates had a pass rate of 92 percent.

The baccalaureate degree program in nursing at Southwestern Adventist University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 655 K Street NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, 202-887-6791. The nursing program is fully approved by the Board of Nursing for the State of Texas, 333 Guadalupe #3 - 460, Austin, TX 87801, 512-305-7400.

  • Faculty Doctoral research project: Creating evidence-based initiatives to improve population health outcomes
  • Full Plate Living and Reversing Diabetes grant-funded community research project:  faculty-led, with student involvement
  • Depression screening protocol: Creation with implementation in a community
  • Membership in Sigma Theta Tau, Nursing Honor Society
  • Board certification in area of nursing practice
  • Participation in a 3-day mega-clinic (Your Best Pathway to Health) in Fort Worth: all faculty and students

  • Certified in CPR and ACLS instruction
  • Certified Mental Health First Aid instruction

 

Nursing Program Admission

 

In the past, SWAU has traditionally accepted 1 class each year. We are now pleased to begin accepting 2 classes every year.

 

Freshman Students

Freshmen who enter SWAU as a nursing major usually begin nursing courses in the second semester of their sophomore year. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing can complete their courses in just 5 semesters!

 

Transfer Students

To be accepted into the SWAU Nursing Program, you must first Apply Online. For your convenience, you may also apply directly through NursingCas. To complete the registration process, visit the Nursing Admission Requirement page.

 

Guaranteed Admission

Prospective students are eligible with the following qualifications:

  • Admitted to Southwestern Adventist University
  • Enrolled as a full-time freshman
  • Declared nursing as your intended major
  • Successfully completed all nursing pre-requisite courses
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Achieve an overall proficient level or above on the TEAS nursing admission test

A degree in nursing opens the door to one of the fastest growing and most-in-demand career fields. Research supports the increase in quality outcomes when nurses have a bachelor's degree (BSN) and many hospitals are hiring with a goal of all BSN nurses. Many of SWAU's graduates work in specialty areas, leadership and management positions, nursing education, or specialty areas. Many others have completed graduate programs and become nurse practitioners, midwives, or nurse anesthetists.
